Fire Ravages Gombe Timber Market as Governor Orders Probe, Assures Traders of Support

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has ordered an immediate investigation and the rollout of emergency relief measures following a devastating fire outbreak at the popular Gombe timber market, Kasuwar Katako, located along the Railway Station area of the state capital.

The fire, which broke out late Monday night after trading hours, destroyed several shops and large quantities of goods, leaving many traders with significant losses and disrupting economic activities in the area.

In a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs at the Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governor described the incident as deeply painful and distressing, noting that it has adversely affected the livelihoods of many hardworking residents who depend on the market for their survival.

Governor Yahaya expressed heartfelt sympathy to the affected traders and business owners, assuring them that the state government stands firmly with them during this difficult period.

He directed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with other relevant agencies, to immediately assess the extent of the damage, investigate the cause of the fire, and provide urgent relief materials to cushion the impact of the losses suffered by victims.

The governor also commended the swift response of the Gombe State Fire Service, personnel from Gombe State University, the Federal Fire Service, private tanker operators, security agencies, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, whose combined efforts helped prevent the inferno from spreading further.

While urging the affected traders to remain calm, Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening fire prevention and emergency response systems across the state. He disclosed plans to establish a fully equipped, state-of-the-art fire service facility to enhance rapid response and public safety.

The statement further revealed that the governor was briefed on an accident involving one of the firefighting trucks during the operation. He expressed concern for those affected and prayed for their speedy recovery.
