X Introduces New Feature Revealing Accounts’ Country of Origin in Transparency Push

X (formerly Twitter) has begun rolling out a new feature that enables users—on a limited basis—to see the country where other accounts are based, a move aimed at improving transparency and curbing misinformation across the platform.

Although the update is not yet available to all users, some can now view an account’s country of origin by visiting its profile, tapping the “Joined” section, and reviewing expanded account details.

Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, announced the development in an October 14 post, explaining that the feature is part of broader efforts to help users verify content authenticity.

Bier stated, “When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity. This is critical to getting a pulse on important issues happening in the world. As part of that, we’re experimenting with displaying new information on profiles, including which country an account is based in.”

According to Bier, the feature will initially appear on select profiles belonging to X team members as part of a test phase designed to gather feedback before wider deployment.

The update also introduces additional profile insights for some users, such as the account creation date, verification status, country of origin, number of username changes, and the app store region used during setup.

Supporters believe this added transparency will help users identify foreign interference, accounts intentionally spreading misinformation, and pages impersonating others or farming engagement.

However, critics have warned that the feature could raise privacy concerns. In response, X has included an option allowing users to display a broader geographical region or continent instead of their exact country.

The limited rollout is part of X’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen content verification and provide users with clearer context around the information they encounter on the platform.
