A violent attack on a commercial bus has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries along the Ayere–Kabba road in Ijumu Local Government Area, Kogi State.
Sources told SaharaReporters on Monday that the incident occurred around 5pm on Sunday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on travellers along the busy route. Some vehicles escaped, but several passengers were struck by bullets. One victim was confirmed dead at the local hospital, while others are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
Residents have expressed growing concern over the Ayere–Kabba corridor, citing frequent attacks by armed groups reportedly operating between Kogi and Kwara States. Recent months have seen a sharp rise in kidnappings, armed robberies, and violent assaults in communities along the Kogi–Kwara border.
On Sunday, residents in Yagba East Local Government Area staged a protest outside the General Hospital in Isanlu over escalating insecurity. The demonstration followed the abduction and killing of an elderly woman, who reportedly could not keep pace with her captors during a forest escape. Witnesses said protesters blocked major roads, set tires on fire, and demanded urgent government action.
Communities in Yagba East and West have experienced near-daily incidents of kidnappings and robberies. Border areas are particularly vulnerable as criminal groups exploit porous boundaries to attack residents and evade security forces. Local leaders have repeatedly called on state and federal authorities to increase security presence and protect citizens from ongoing threats.
