Education Ministry Denies Ignoring Maths Prodigy’s Sponsorship
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed ongoing talks with the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team, led by Yayale Ahmed, as its two-week warning strike enters the seventh day.
ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said progress had been made on five of the union’s seven demands, including the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, and mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). He added that discussions were also addressing land disputes at the University of Abuja and alleged victimisation of members at LASU, FUTO, and Prince Abubakar Audu University.
In a statement titled Strike Bulletin No. 2, Piwuna urged members to remain united while negotiations on the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement continue.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has denied reports that it refused to sponsor 15-year-old Agbo Adoga, a student from Port Harcourt who qualified for the International Mathematics Olympiad in China.
Reacting to public outrage over the issue, ministry spokesperson Folasade Boriowo stated that no official request for sponsorship had been received, advising the public to disregard unverified claims.
