President Tinubu Lifts State of Emergency in Rivers State, Restores Civilian Governance

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, effective from midnight today. This move restores full civilian governance in the oil-rich state, which had been under federal control since March 18, 2025.

In a nationwide broadcast, President Tinubu announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, are to resume their duties on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

The state of emergency was declared following a severe political crisis between Governor Fubara and the majority of the state legislature, compounded by incidents of pipeline vandalism that disrupted oil production and exports. The federal government intervened to restore order, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator during the emergency period.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, traditional rulers, and the people of Rivers State for their support throughout the emergency. He acknowledged the challenges faced and emphasized the importance of returning to democratic governance.

The lifting of the emergency rule marks a significant step towards restoring stability and governance in Rivers State. Governor Fubara and other officials are expected to address ongoing issues and work towards the development and prosperity of the state.
