The ancient city of Ile-Ife witnessed a historic moment on Saturday as Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, paid a reconciliatory visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
Igboho, who had in the past made critical remarks about the revered monarch, openly tendered an unreserved apology during the visit, admitting his past mistakes and seeking forgiveness.
The event, attended by prominent Yoruba traditional rulers, chiefs, and supporters, was marked by emotional exchanges as the activist revealed that he was deeply moved to learn that the Ooni played a vital role in securing his release from detention in the Benin Republic.
“I have offended the Ooni in the past, and I am here to seek his forgiveness. Whoever I may have offended should also forgive me,” Igboho declared.
He further appealed to Oba Ogunwusi to use his influence to help facilitate the removal of his name from the security watchlist and ensure the unfreezing of his bank accounts, stressing that his primary concern remains the security of Yorubaland.
In their goodwill messages, the Attah of Ayede-Ekiti, Oba Abdulmumini Orisagbemi, and the Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi, commended Igboho for his humility and assured him of the support of Yoruba traditional institutions.
Responding, the Ooni of Ife urged Igboho and his followers to embrace patience and humility, noting that these virtues remain the true foundation of leadership.
“I had several private meetings with former President Muhammadu Buhari concerning you, and I thank God you are alive today. It was not easy,” Ooni revealed.
The monarch emphasized unity and reconciliation, assuring Igboho that outstanding issues, including his frozen accounts and watchlist status, would be addressed.
“You are my son, and I am not angry with you. You are a pride to the Yoruba race. Let us put aside fights and unite for the progress of Yorubaland,” Oba Ogunwusi declared.
