Made Kuti Slams Ethnic Critics Over Marriage to Inedoye Onyenso

Afrobeat singer and grandson of the legendary Fela Kuti, Made Kuti, has responded to criticisms trailing his marriage to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, describing ethnic bigotry as a “slave mentality.”

Hobnob News recalls that Kuti tied the knot with Onyenso at a civil wedding ceremony in Lagos in November 2023. However, the union has continued to attract negative remarks from some individuals who condemned the marriage on the grounds of “mixing blood” due to the couple’s different ethnic backgrounds.

Reacting to a recent post by an X user, @AdemolaOgudu, who branded him a “foolish Yoruba man” for marrying an Igbo woman, Kuti strongly dismissed such sentiments, stressing that ethnic superiority or inferiority has no place in a progressive Africa.

“Believing ethnic superiority/inferiority is justifiable is slave mentality,” Kuti wrote.

He further urged his critics to embrace the teachings and philosophies of Pan-Africanists such as his great-grandmother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, his grandfather Fela Kuti, Kwame Nkrumah, and Thomas Sankara, all of whom championed African unity and liberation.

According to Kuti, Africa stands to gain more when united rather than divided along ethnic lines.
