Amnesty International Urges Stronger Action as 65 Killed in Deadly Attacks Across Nigeria

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to take urgent and stronger measures to safeguard citizens’ right to life, following a series of deadly attacks that claimed at least 65 lives in one week.

In a post on X on Friday, the global human rights organisation decried the rising tide of violence, describing the scale of killings and abductions as “shocking and unacceptable.”

“This week alone, at least 65 people have been killed in horrific attacks,” Amnesty stated.

The group cited particularly deadly incidents, including a massacre at a mosque in Katsina State where over 50 worshippers were killed and more than 60 abducted. In Plateau State, gunmen reportedly killed over 15 farmers in Mangu Local Government Area, displacing more than 200 people.

Amnesty warned that the alarming escalation of attacks, ransom kidnappings, and frequent killings across Nigeria has created widespread fear and insecurity.

“The ongoing insecurity shows a failure by authorities to protect lives and property,” the group said, stressing that Nigerians should not be left at the mercy of rampaging gunmen.

“No one deserves to live constantly bracing for the next attack or abduction,” it added.

The organisation also reminded the Nigerian government of its legal obligations under international and regional human rights treaties, as well as the Nigerian constitution, to guarantee the safety and protection of all citizens without discrimination.
