The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has distributed 50 electric cars and 50 electric tricycles to 100 indigent youths in a landmark initiative designed to boost economic empowerment and promote environmental sustainability.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony on Thursday in Lafia, Governor Sule said the programme was aimed at creating livelihood opportunities for young people while reducing unemployment in the state.
“These vehicles and tricycles are powered by electricity rather than petrol or CNG, making them cost-effective and eco-friendly. Beneficiaries will run them as businesses to generate income while contributing to sustainable transportation,” he stated.
To support the rollout, the governor announced that a charging centre had already been established at the newly constructed state secretariat in Lafia. Additional centres will be built in Akwanga and Keffi to serve the Nasarawa North and West Senatorial Districts, with plans for more across other local government areas.
According to Sule, the first batch of cars and tricycles will be deployed to Lafia, Akwanga, and Keffi to provide transport services for civil servants and students in institutions such as the Federal University of Lafia, College of Education Akwanga, and Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
“All the vehicles are fully air-conditioned and capable of operating for an entire day once fully charged,” he added.
The governor expressed optimism that the scheme would ease transportation challenges, create jobs, and align with global best practices in clean energy.
In his remarks, the Emir of Lafia and Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs, Justice Muhammad Sidi-Bage (Rtd.), commended Governor Sule for his foresight, urging beneficiaries to use the vehicles responsibly to reduce transportation costs and provide relief to residents.
He further assured that traditional rulers would continue to support government policies and remain non-partisan while offering prayers and blessings for the success of leaders across political divides.
