Two Arrested Over Murder of Police Escort in Benin City

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested two suspects in connection with the brutal killing of a police officer assigned to an expatriate in Benin City.

Hobnob News reports that the tragic incident occurred along First East Circular Road on Wednesday, shortly after the officer, identified as Sergeant Aminu Yusuf, had escorted the expatriate to make a bank withdrawal.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers  suspected to be a four-man armed robbery gang trailed the vehicle from the banking premises and opened fire shortly after departure. Sergeant Yusuf sustained critical gunshot wounds during the ambush and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

The assailants reportedly fled the scene with the officer’s AK-47 rifle.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, said two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the attack. He added that a full-scale manhunt has been launched to track down the remaining suspects.

“We are making progress in our investigations. Two individuals believed to be involved in the murder have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others still at large,” CSP Yamu said.

He assured the public that justice will be served and urged anyone with useful information to come forward.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, especially regarding the safety of security escorts assigned to protect individuals during high-risk movements such as bank transactions.
