A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died under controversial circumstances during an alleged sexual encounter with a female student of the institution.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at a hotel in Anyigba. According to the Kogi State Police Command, the matter was reported by the hotel manager, Mr. Moses Friday, after the student involved, identified as 22-year-old Gloria Samuel, ran to the hotel reception to seek help when the lecturer suddenly collapsed.
Police spokesperson, SP William Aya, who confirmed the incident to Hobnob News on Friday in Lokoja, described it as “unfortunate” and disclosed that an autopsy has already been carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
“Preliminary reports indicate that Dr. Ibikunle checked into the hotel with a female student. The student alerted the hotel staff when the lecturer collapsed. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Aya said.
The deceased, a married man and father, was a lecturer in the Department of Social Studies Education. He had reportedly consumed an unspecified quantity of energy drinks prior to the incident, although that detail remains unverified pending toxicology results.
The female student was immediately taken into police custody and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further questioning.
Students and residents expressed shock at the development, with many calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
The university has yet to release an official statement, but campus sources say internal disciplinary reviews may be triggered as a result of the incident.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and any updates will be communicated accordingly.
