Former interim coach of the Super Eagles, Monday Sinclair, has passed away at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with diabetes.
The news of his death was confirmed on Wednesday by ex-Nigeria international goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, who paid a heartfelt tribute in a Facebook post. Sinclair is believed to have died around 3:15 p.m.
“Our daddy is gone. What a man,” Idah wrote. “He signed me to play for Sharks. Gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna.”
Sinclair briefly managed the Super Eagles in 1997 following the dismissal of Frenchman Philippe Troussier. During his stint as interim coach, he led the national team in two friendly matches against Zambia and Tunisia.
Widely respected for his eye for talent, Sinclair is credited with discovering and mentoring several Nigerian football legends, including Peter Rufai, Taribo West, Finidi George, and Peterside Idah.
Tributes have been pouring in from across the football community, honoring Sinclair’s immense contributions to Nigerian football both as a coach and as a talent developer.
Details of funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
