ADC Intensifies Coalition Moves, Takes Over PDP Structures in Northern States

As part of its strategy to build a strong coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has begun reaching out to prominent politicians from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although the ADC has already assumed control of PDP structures in states like Yobe, Gombe, and Adamawa, many of the high-profile figures being courted are yet to officially defect.

This development comes amid reports—denied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State—that he and five other APC governors plan to join the ADC. Meanwhile, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, affirmed his continued commitment to his supporters and political allies.

In a related twist, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, challenged ADC’s Interim National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, to publicly account for his tenure as Minister of Interior.

ADC consolidates gains in northern PDP strongholds

Confirming the ADC’s takeover of PDP structures in Yobe, Gombe, and Adamawa, Paul Ibe, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said the move signifies growing support for the emerging coalition.

“The movement is gaining traction,” Ibe stated. “Atiku Abubakar is guiding the coalition to evolve into a credible and viable platform. Yobe, Gombe, and Adamawa PDP executives have already aligned with us. Momentum is clearly building.”

He lauded Atiku’s efforts in uniting political factions, describing it as a sign of genuine leadership. Ibe also drew a parallel between coalition-building and early marriage struggles, emphasising the need for compromise and patience.

“Atiku will continue to offer direction to ensure the coalition grows at all levels—ward, local government, and state. By year-end, any obstacle to this movement will be swept aside,” he said.

PDP dismisses reports of defections

Despite these developments, the PDP insists it remains strong and united. The Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen Forum and Imo PDP Chairman, Austin Nwachukwu, described the reported defections as irrelevant.

He said: “The Yobe and Borno chairmen have denied these claims. These are fabricated stories. Some of those leaving are over 70. What are they still seeking—pensions or national service?”

He added that many who previously defected have since returned to the PDP and maintained that the party is resilient and focused.

ADC positions itself as a credible alternative to APC

Bolaji Abdullahi, Interim National Spokesperson for the ADC, highlighted the coalition’s broader appeal, saying it offers a genuine alternative to the ruling APC.

“The ADC brings together Nigerians disillusioned with the current administration. In the coming months, expect not only PDP members but also figures from SDP, Labour Party, and NNPP to join us,” he said.

Abdullahi stressed that the coalition is issue-focused, not personality-driven.

“Our concern is the deteriorating state of the nation. We’re not interested in personal squabbles. Everyone with something to contribute should be part of this effort to rescue Nigeria. This is about the collective good, not individual ambition,” he concluded.
