A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and prominent figure in the opposition coalition, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed plans to register a new political party as a fallback in case of disruption within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking during an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa Service on Wednesday night, El-Rufai explained that the backup party is being considered to guard against possible interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he fears may attempt to create internal conflict in the ADC by pitting its original members against the coalition’s new leadership.
He warned that the APC has a pattern of using state institutions to intimidate dissenters.
“Those who decline to join the APC are often targeted for investigation by the EFCC, ICPC, or the Code of Conduct Bureau,” he said.
El-Rufai noted that the opposition’s adoption of the ADC is provisional, and the coalition is prepared to shift to a new platform if the ADC is destabilised.
