Bomb Blast Kills Six During Eid Festivities in Sokoto Village

A bomb explosion tragically disrupted Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Gwabro village, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, on Sunday, June 8, claiming the lives of six people.

The Sokoto State Police Command, through its spokesperson Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the incident and the casualty count but withheld further details as investigations continue. The blast reportedly occurred during the customary visits between villages that mark the festive period.

An eyewitness identified as Hashimu said the explosion happened in the afternoon while residents were moving between neighbouring communities to celebrate the festival. The blast sent shockwaves through the area, ending the celebrations in grief.

Garzali Raka, an aide to the Tangaza Local Government Chairman, confirmed in a statement that the deceased were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Local accounts suggest the explosion may have been the work of the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has repeatedly attacked communities in both Tangaza and neighbouring Gudu Local Government Area. Though unconfirmed, residents suspect the group planted the explosive device that caused Sunday’s tragedy.

Gripped by fear and mourning, villagers are now calling on the Sokoto State Government and federal authorities to act swiftly to restore peace and security in the region, which has suffered from years of banditry, terrorism, and the erosion of normal community life.
