The Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State has expressed relief over the recent defection of some prominent members, describing their exit as a “blessing in disguise” and an opportunity for internal restructuring.
In a statement issued by the state chairman, Patriarch Ogar Osim, the party singled out Hon. Ekpenyong Akiba, the current member of the House of Representatives for Odukpani/Calabar Municipal Federal Constituency, and Hon. Daniel Asuquo, a former lawmaker for Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency, as having shown ingratitude to the party that helped build their political careers.
“We regret that these officers have been so ungrateful to the party that gave them the platform on a platter of gold to campaign for their electoral victories at the polls,” Osim said.
The party chairman likened their presence in LP to “the biblical Jonah in the boat,” suggesting their exit has removed an impediment to party progress. He specifically recalled resisting pressure to replace Akiba as LP’s candidate in the last general elections, a decision he said paved the way for Akiba’s eventual success at the polls.
“I have done my part to assist him get to where he is today, I am happy I did it for him. Appreciating people is not necessarily out of abundance but it is a virtue,” Osim noted.
Despite the strong criticism, Osim wished the defectors well in their future political endeavors. He urged LP members to remain respectful, responsible, and supportive of government policies that serve the common good.
In a related development, the party has announced a reshuffling of its leadership structure in the state, following the defections. Two female party faithful, Mrs. Myra Benson and Mrs. Abigail Ekeng, have been appointed as chairpersons of the Calabar Municipality and Calabar South Local Government Area chapters, respectively.
Additionally, Mrs. Mary Okon has been named the new State Women Leader of the party, a move the leadership says aligns with its commitment to inclusiveness and gender balance.
The Labour Party in Cross River says it remains focused on strengthening its base and providing a viable alternative to the ruling parties ahead of future elections.
