Perform or Be Fired: Delta Governor Issues Stern Warning to Commissioners

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has sent a strong message to members of the State Executive Council: perform or face immediate dismissal.

Speaking on Monday during the inauguration of eight newly constructed duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, the governor made it clear that performance—not lobbying or hearsay—will determine who stays in office.

“There’s no plan to dissolve the cabinet wholesale,” Oborevwori said. “But if you’re not performing, you’ll be dropped. That won’t affect others who are doing their jobs well. Like now, two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel—you’re not doing well.”

He debunked recent rumours suggesting an impending cabinet reshuffle, describing them as baseless gossip. “People just talk too much,” the governor remarked, “but the truth is, the only thing that matters is performance.”

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that visibility, initiative, and energy are non-negotiables for commissioners in his administration. He encouraged his cabinet members to take ownership of their responsibilities and make themselves available with actionable proposals and memos.

“As a commissioner, we need to see your impact,” he said. “Don’t wait for the governor to come to you—take initiative. If there’s a problem in your ministry, you are responsible. Any ministry doing well reflects the commissioner’s commitment and effectiveness.”

The governor also highlighted the administration’s plans to continue inaugurating projects across the state throughout the year, with a special focus on articulating and showcasing key developments in Warri.

Drawing inspiration from President Bola Tinubu’s recent commissioning of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, Oborevwori noted: “We’ll articulate our projects just as Mr. President did and carry out inaugurations in one location for visibility and impact.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Finance and Dean of Commissioners, Chief Fidelis Tilije, expressed gratitude to the governor for approving the new commissioners’ quarters and called for the renovation of 22 older units.

Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, also praised the governor’s support, stating that the newly delivered project includes eight duplexes, each equipped with boys’ quarters, lounges, and modern amenities.

With the governor’s zero-tolerance approach to underperformance now clear, the coming months may signal a wave of accountability and reshuffling in the Delta State cabinet.
