President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, as the new Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS). The appointment, announced on May 24, 2025, takes immediate effect. Shaibu replaces Professor Olawale Moronkola.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Shaibu on the appointment, with NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau praising his passion for sports and his efforts in reviving sports development in Edo State. Stakeholders across Nigeria’s sports industry have also welcomed the appointment, citing Shaibu’s track record as a sports promoter and administrator.
As Edo Deputy Governor, Shaibu helped revamp the Bendel Insurance Football Club and launched several grassroots sports initiatives. His hands-on approach and commitment to youth engagement through sports earned him widespread recognition.
The National Institute for Sports, established in 1974, is Nigeria’s leading institution for training coaches, sports scientists, and sports managers. Shaibu’s leadership is expected to usher in reforms and improvements in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda to strengthen national institutions and promote inclusivity.
Shaibu’s appointment also reflects his political resurgence. After briefly falling out with his political allies in Edo State, he returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and actively participated in the 2024 Edo governorship election. His elevation to a federal leadership position confirms his continuing relevance in national politics.
With his background in sports and governance, Shaibu is expected to drive innovation and capacity development at the NIS. His appointment signals a renewed commitment by the federal government to enhance Nigeria’s sports performance and infrastructure through competent leadership.
