The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a stern warning to Afam Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives, threatening his expulsion from the party and the initiation of a recall process against him.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, accused Ogene of gross underperformance as a lawmaker elected under the Labour Party platform. He further alleged that Ogene had come into possession of a classified document purportedly from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), raising serious concerns over how the lawmaker accessed such sensitive material.
“A classified document, which should be with the IGP or the Minister of Justice, cannot be in Ogene’s possession,” Ifoh stated. “He is expected to contribute in making laws in the National Assembly. How come he is now privy to classified documents from the IGP and AGF’s office?”
Ifoh called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently invite Ogene for questioning regarding the source of the document. According to him, Ogene has engaged in what he described as an attempt to cyber-bully the attorney-general, the police, and the party’s leadership, in a matter he insisted was political.
The party also confirmed that Ogene had been suspended due to what it termed his “incapability to lead the party caucus” in the National Assembly. Ifoh claimed that the lawmaker, frustrated by the Supreme Court’s recent ruling which upheld Abure’s leadership, had resorted to “fighting dirty.”
“He and his sponsors had expected that by now, Abure’s leadership would have been terminated but they were surprised at the Supreme Court ruling which put paid to their evil intentions,” Ifoh added.
Warning of further disciplinary action, Ifoh stated that unless Ogene changes course, the party would proceed to expel him and formally begin the process to recall him from his constituency.
“We will also institute his recall from his constituency because he is a disservice to the people he claims to represent,” he said.
As at press time, Rep. Afam Ogene had not issued a public response to the allegations.
