In a bold and unwavering stance, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating cultism, declaring that intimidation and threats will not derail the state’s mission to ensure safety for all.
Addressing a peaceful rally of youths at the Government House on Tuesday, the governor emphasized that the fight against cultism is not just policy—it is personal.
“If I wasn’t protected as a young man, I wouldn’t be governor today,” Okpebholo told the crowd. “Cultism must end in Edo. Every single life in this state matters, and we are not backing down.”
Governor Okpebholo warned that unchecked cult activities pose a severe threat to investment and economic growth in the state.
“Safety is the first condition for prosperity. Investors will avoid Edo if they sense danger. We must send a clear message—Edo is not a safe haven for criminals.”
Responding to concerns surrounding the demolition of a building allegedly linked to cult activities, the governor stressed that legal protocols were strictly followed.
“We don’t demolish at random. Every action taken is backed by the law. This is a focused campaign against the enemies of our peace,” he declared. “Their threats won’t deter us.”
The rally saw enthusiastic support from youth leaders, including the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo Chapter, Moses Joseph, who declared the total backing of Edo youths for the administration’s anti-cultism drive.
“We’re tired of the bloodshed. This rally is the outcome of a collective resolution from student and youth leaders across all three senatorial districts,” Joseph noted.
He urged full implementation of the communique reached by the youth coalition to ensure long-term impact.
Human rights advocate Precious Oruche also lent her voice in support, applauding the governor’s swift action in addressing a crisis that has plagued Edo for years.
“Cultism was almost a ritual here. But with you in office, we see change,” Oruche said. “We urge security agencies to be just and ensure innocent citizens are protected in this process.”
The rally marked a significant moment in Edo’s evolving fight against cultism, as a united front emerges between the government and the youth determined to reclaim their state from violence and fear.
