Tragedy struck the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) last Friday when a young physiotherapist, simply identified as Alex, was shot and killed by gunmen who stormed the hospital premises.
According to eyewitness accounts gathered by Hobnob News, the armed assailants invaded the hospital and opened fire, killing Alex—believed to be in his twenties—on the spot. The attack sent patients, staff, and visitors into panic as they fled for safety.
In response to the shocking incident, members of the hospital’s Physiotherapy Department staged a peaceful protest to demand justice for their slain colleague. In a viral video circulating online, staff were seen holding placards and chanting in anger, condemning the rising insecurity and calling for stronger protective measures within the hospital environment.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, confirmed the killing and stated that the matter has been reported to the relevant security agencies.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate event. The management has reported the matter to the police and other security operatives, and we are currently awaiting the outcome of their investigations,” Uwaila said.
The incident adds to the growing wave of violence in Edo State, which residents and observers have described as increasingly alarming. Security analysts have called for urgent action to address the worsening trend and restore public confidence in safety across the state.
No arrests have been reported as of the time of filing this report.
