Boko Haram Gunmen Kill 7 in Funeral Attack on Chibok Community

At least seven people were brutally killed and several others injured when suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly assault on Kopl village in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday evening.

Sources confirmed that the attack occurred around 6:00 p.m. as residents gathered to observe the final funeral rites of a deceased community member. The assailants reportedly stormed the area and opened fire indiscriminately on the mourners.

Chairman of Chibok LGA, Hon. Modu Mustaph, confirmed the incident and warned that the death toll could rise as many of the injured were in critical condition. “Many victims have been evacuated to Mubi General Hospital in Adamawa State. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and a mass burial is being arranged for Tuesday,” Mustaph said.

The attack comes just hours after another tragic incident along the Gamboru Ngala-Kala Balge road, where several civilians were killed and dozens injured after their vehicles struck improvised explosive devices (IEDs) allegedly planted by the same terror group.

Reacting to the renewed wave of violence, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Southern Borno in the National Assembly, expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation.

“The situation is pathetic and beyond human imagination,” Ndume said. “Just yesterday, I received a report that over ten vigilante members were killed in a village between Hawul and Garkida in Adamawa. My people are facing mass casualties without any form of confrontation.”

The Senator further lamented that more than 100 people have been killed in coordinated attacks in the last month alone across communities such as Sabon Gari, Izge, Kirawa, Pulka, Damboa, Chibok, and Askira Uba.

The latest attack has triggered fresh waves of displacement, with terrified residents fleeing Kopl and nearby villages for safer areas and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

Despite claims of progress in the counterinsurgency war, the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks continues to pose a major threat to peace and stability in the North-East.
