NSCDC Busts Major Crude Oil Syndicate, Uncovers 5 Illegal Dumps in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered five illegal crude oil dump sites in the Jahi/Katampe area of Abuja, dealing a significant blow to an underground network of oil thieves.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale confirmed that seven suspects connected to the illegal refining and distribution operation have been apprehended. The arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS).

During the raid, security operatives recovered a white truck with three compartments fully loaded with 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), reportedly accompanied by unverifiable waybills. Four Mercedes-Benz short peddler trucks and several other vehicles used in the illicit trade were also seized.

The NSCDC further disclosed the recovery of industrial pumping machines, various hosepipes, a Mikano generator, and approximately 23 surface metallic tanks—some filled with large volumes of suspected AGO. A makeshift container shelter and other key items used in the operation were also impounded.

“These arrests are a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Corps in dismantling criminal networks engaged in crude oil theft across the country,” the statement read.

The NSCDC assured the public that all suspects will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to deter others from engaging in economic sabotage.
