In a diplomatic victory, the Federal Government of Nigeria has secured the release of six Nigerian women who were unjustly detained in Cape Verde over false allegations of human trafficking.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to the release, the Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau engaged Cape Verdean authorities, which led to the successful resolution of the case and the safe departure of the women from the island nation.
The Ministry explained that the women had travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday but were wrongly accused and subsequently detained on trafficking allegations that were later proven baseless.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform you that the Nigerian nationals (ladies) who were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and have left the country,” the statement read.
The Federal Government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the safety, rights, and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad, assuring that it will continue to intervene swiftly in such matters to protect its nationals.
