The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong caution to the organizers of a planned nationwide protest spearheaded by the “Take It Back Movement,” describing the timing of the demonstration as inappropriate and potentially disruptive.
The protest, scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025, coincides with the newly declared National Police Day, a day set aside by the Federal Government to recognize and celebrate the dedication and resilience of police officers across the country.
In a press release issued Sunday, the NPF stated that while it upholds the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, staging such an event on the same day as the official police celebration raises serious concerns. The statement emphasized that the National Police Day will host numerous dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats, making the timing of the protest questionable.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is however questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole,” the release stated.
The Police advised the organizers to reconsider their plans, labeling the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous.” They also called on potential participants to seek dialogue with appropriate government institutions instead of taking to the streets.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to maintaining peace, upholding the rule of law, and respecting citizens’ rights—while urging restraint and patriotic conduct.
As tensions simmer, the nation watches to see whether the protest will proceed or be re-evaluated in light of the police’s advisory.
