Uromi Arrests: DSS Detains Key Suspects in Travellers’ Lynching Amid Rising Tensions

The brutal lynching of 16 travellers of northern origin in Uromi, Edo State, has led to significant developments, with the Department of State Security (DSS) apprehending two principal suspects. Hobnob News reports on the arrests and the escalating tensions surrounding the tragic incident.

According to a statement released by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpehbolo, the DSS apprehended the suspects in Uromi based on credible intelligence. He also revealed that security agencies are actively pursuing other individuals involved in the killings.

“Operatives of the Department of State Security have arrested two principal suspects involved in the killing of 16 Nigerians of northern extraction in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government last week,” Itua stated. “The suspects were arrested by operatives of the DSS in Uromi, following credible intelligence. Operatives of various security agencies are hunting for other key suspects involved in the unfortunate incidents.”

Further information indicates that the two detained suspects have been transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution, as directed by the Inspector-General of Police. Additionally, 14 other individuals previously arrested in connection with the killings have been transferred to Force Headquarters.

The Edo and Kano state governments are reportedly collaborating to determine appropriate compensation for the victims’ families. While the specifics of the compensation remain undisclosed, Itua confirmed that discussions are underway to ensure the families receive adequate support.

Meanwhile, the aftermath of the killings has created a climate of fear in Uromi. Residents of the affected area are reportedly fleeing their homes, fearing indiscriminate arrests by security agencies. Women have also staged protests at the Ojuromi of Uromi palace, expressing their concerns about the ongoing arrests.

Adding to the already tense situation, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that opposition political parties are plotting to destabilize the state and force a declaration of a state of emergency.

APC state chairman, Jarret Tenebe, claimed during a news conference in Abuja that these parties are attempting to undermine the outcome of the recent governorship election, which is currently being challenged at the Edo Election Petition Tribunal.

“It has come to our attention that the leadership of some major opposition parties in our state, along with two others, has devised a reckless and dangerous plot to instigate crisis and make Edo ungovernable,” Tenebe stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the tribunal is scheduled to deliver judgment on the petition filed by the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, against the outcome of the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

The arrests by the DSS and the allegations of political destabilization have heightened tensions in Edo State, as the region grapples with the aftermath of the tragic lynching. Hobnob News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
