Benue Lawmaker Urges Tinubu to Intervene in Otukpo Insecurity Crisis

Blessing Onuh, the lawmaker representing Otukpo-Ohimini Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has issued an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu, calling for immediate intervention to address the escalating insecurity in Otukpo, Benue State.

Onuh described the recent wave of attacks and killings as a national emergency that demands swift action from the federal government. She expressed deep concern over the rising violence in her constituency, particularly the recent brutal murder of retired customs officer Onche Akatu in Asa 2 community, where two members of his family were also abducted.

A String of Killings and Abductions

The lawmaker also condemned the murder of Mrs. Felicia Ochigbo, a nursing mother, in the Old NTA Area of Asa, as well as the killing of an Igbo businessman in the community. Additionally, she recalled how five men were slaughtered by suspected herdsmen in Okpomoju Community, Okete Ward last month, spreading fear and panic among residents.

“These killings and kidnappings have become so frequent that it now feels as though they have become a sad norm,” Onuh lamented.

Frustration Over Government Inaction

Onuh criticized security agencies for their lack of concrete action, noting that after every attack, government officials issue statements claiming they are “on top of the matter,” yet the violence persists.

“Why are these criminals not being arrested? Why is peace not being restored? My people deserve to live without fear,” she questioned.

The lawmaker further warned that the unending violence has forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands, worsening food shortages in the region. Many residents have also fled their homes to escape the attacks, leaving entire communities deserted.

Call for Federal Action and Caution Against Reprisals

Onuh urged President Tinubu to direct security forces to intensify efforts in tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice. She also pleaded with her constituents, particularly the youth, to resist the urge for jungle justice or reprisal attacks, as this could further escalate the crisis.

Reassuring her people, Onuh vowed to continue working with political leaders and security agencies to restore peace and security in Otukpo and surrounding areas.

“This violence must end. My people deserve to live in peace and safety,” she affirmed.
