President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly cautioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, regarding the forthcoming FCT elections. During a dinner on Saturday evening celebrating Eid-Al-Fitr, Tinubu emphasized the importance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing victory in the FCT. He addressed Wike, stating, “Give me any opportunity for my party to win elections in FCT. I know where you are coming from, your own party.” Tinubu further warned, “If this thing goes too much in your own favor, you will lose your job.”
This development follows growing tensions surrounding Wike’s role in the FCT. Various groups and individuals have called for his removal, citing concerns over his actions and policies. For instance, the Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW) has urged for Wike’s immediate dismissal, accusing him of contributing to political unrest in Rivers State and engaging in nepotism. The YCW stated, “Wike is self-destructive. He has turned Rivers State into a theater of political war and a Cold War battlefield.”
Additionally, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in the FCT has accused Wike of dismantling the party’s structures in Abuja. They claim that the minister has ignored APC members and appointed individuals from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) instead. The party leaders warned that if this situation persists, “the party will struggle to get 2% for the President in the 2027 Presidential election and may lose the next Area Councils election.”
These events underscore the complex political dynamics at play in the FCT, highlighting the challenges and controversies surrounding Wike’s tenure as minister.
