A heartbreaking incident unfolded last week Tuesday in Mamfe, Cameroon, where 15 young men from Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, lost their lives after being fatally shot by Cameroonian soldiers, known as the Bataillon d’Intervention Rapide (BIR). The victims had reportedly traveled to Cameroon in search of work, engaging in cocoa processing and cultivation due to the harsh economic conditions in Nigeria.
According to eyewitness accounts, the soldiers opened fire when the youths attempted to flee upon being spotted. Six individuals were confirmed dead at the scene, while others were later discovered to have succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total number of casualties to 15. Among the victims was Terver Anula Gyado, son of HRH Anula Gyado, the former head of the Mbadede kindred.
Additionally, several others were reportedly arrested and taken into detention, accused of illegally entering the country. Some of the bodies of the deceased were later transported back to Nigeria through Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, prompting calls for further investigation. This tragedy underscores the dangers faced by Nigerians seeking economic opportunities in neighboring countries and raises concerns about cross-border security and human rights.
Authorities from both Nigeria and Cameroon are yet to issue official statements regarding the incident. Families of the victims and local leaders have urged the Nigerian government to intervene and seek justice for those affected.
