Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, a move he described as a major step toward achieving stable and independent power for the state.
“Yesterday, I signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant step toward ensuring stable and independent power for our state,” the governor announced. He explained that the new law grants the state government the authority to establish the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA) and oversee the regulation of its electricity market.
Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding electricity access across all local government areas, particularly the eight LGAs not yet covered under the Aba ring-fenced area. “By integrating them into the Umuahia ring-fenced area, we are working to ensure that every part of Abia has reliable power,” he stated.
He further highlighted the economic benefits of the legislation, emphasizing its potential to attract new investments, boost renewable energy initiatives, and support Abia’s long-term vision of becoming a leading regional power hub. “The legislation will unlock new investment potentials, enhance renewable energy initiatives, and align with our long-term vision of positioning Abia as a leading regional power hub,” he said.
Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the Abia State House of Assembly for their efforts in passing the bill, particularly commending Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa for his leadership. “I appreciate the commitment of members of the Abia State House of Assembly, under the exemplary leadership of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, in ensuring the careful and successful passage of the bill,” he noted.
He also acknowledged the contributions of development partners who supported the initiative and concluded his statement with a message of goodwill. “May God continue to bless Abia State,” he said.
