Hon. Terseer Ugbor, the Member of the House of Representatives for Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency, has proven to be a dedicated and visionary leader. His tenure in the National Assembly has been marked by relentless efforts to bring meaningful development to his constituents, ensuring their interests are well-represented at the national level. Among his many legislative accomplishments, one of the most transformative is his proposal for the establishment of Kwande National Park in Benue State.
Hon. Ugbor has consistently pushed for projects that directly benefit his people, including the Federal Polytechnic Adikpo, the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria outstation in Ushongo, and the ongoing construction of a Technology Incubation Hub in Adikpo. His latest legislative move—the proposal for Kwande National Park—is a reflection of his deep commitment to environmental conservation, sustainable development, and security enhancement.
The park is being proposed through the Bill for the Repeal and Reenactment of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, NOSDRA Act, and the National Park Service Act. If successfully established, Kwande National Park will be a significant step forward in the conservation of biodiversity, preservation of ecosystems, and mitigation of climate change impacts.
The importance of national parks in preserving natural heritage cannot be overstated. Kwande National Park will provide a sanctuary for wildlife, ensuring that endangered species and unique ecosystems are protected. Additionally, the park will contribute to climate change mitigation by maintaining forests that act as carbon sinks, helping to regulate the environment.
Beyond environmental benefits, the park will bring social and economic advantages to the local communities. Eco-tourism will create jobs, attract investment, and generate revenue for both the state and local businesses. It will also offer opportunities for scientific research, environmental education, and cultural preservation. By integrating local communities into conservation efforts, the park will enhance sustainable development while respecting indigenous knowledge and traditions.
One of the most pressing challenges in the Kwande area has been security. The region has experienced volatility due to various conflicts, and the establishment of the national park is expected to contribute to stability. By increasing federal government presence, strengthening surveillance, and creating regulated access to forested areas, the park will help curb illegal activities, such as deforestation, poaching, and cross-border criminal operations. This, in turn, will provide a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
Hon. Ugbor’s dedication to his constituency is evident in his numerous initiatives, from infrastructure projects to security interventions. Just recently, he oversaw the installation of 100 solar streetlights across multiple communities in Kwande/Ushongo, a move that enhances security and improves the quality of life for residents. His legislative efforts continue to set a precedent for effective representation and service-oriented leadership.
The establishment of Kwande National Park is not just a policy proposal; it is a bold vision for the future of Benue State. It is a step towards sustainable development, environmental conservation, economic empowerment, and enhanced security. As the bill progresses through legislative channels, it holds the promise of transforming Kwande into a model of conservation-driven growth, benefiting both present and future generations.
