A delegation of senior officials from Niger’s military government traveled to Abuja to meet with Nigerian government representatives, resulting in the approval of 300 trucks of Premium Motor Spirit for delivery to Niger.¹ This move is seen as a strategic bargaining tool in ongoing negotiations between the two countries.
Niger’s fuel crisis began when a Chinese refinery, which had been supplying the country with fuel, shut down due to issues with the supplier. With limited options, Niger turned to Nigeria for help. The details of the arrangement remain secret, but a senior government official revealed that Nigeria hopes to use the fuel supply as leverage to bring Niger back into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The fuel shortage in Niger has had devastating effects, with prices skyrocketing to as high as N8,000 per liter in some areas. The crisis has also led to long queues at petrol stations and widespread economic disruption.
