The House of Representatives has ordered the immediate shutdown of pornographic websites across Nigeria, directing the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to enforce the restriction.
The directive was issued during plenary on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Hon. Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State. Tafoki emphasized that the move was necessary to “protect societal values and curb the negative influence of explicit content on Nigerian youth.
As part of the directive, internet service providers in the country are expected to block access to pornographic websites in compliance with the new order.
It remains to be seen how the NCC and internet providers will implement the measure and whether it will face any legal or technical challenges.
This development comes amid other legislative actions, including the House urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to suspend new ATM charges and an ongoing probe into the utilization of bailout and take-off grants.
