Naka, a once peaceful community in Benue State, has been plunged into chaos as protesters set fire to houses and buildings in response to the killing of three operatives of the Benue Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herders in Garuwa community.

The violence escalated after the victims’ bodies were brought to Naka, triggering protests that quickly turned destructive. The protesters, fueled by anger and frustration, targeted several buildings, including:
– Local Government Secretariat: The seat of local government was set ablaze, symbolizing the protesters’ outrage against the authorities’ perceived inaction.
– Ter Nagi Palace: The palace of the traditional ruler was also torched, highlighting the depth of anger and desperation among the protesters.
– Hotel belonging to Sen. Zam*: A hotel owned by Senator Zam was destroyed, along with other properties, including the homes of Engr Felix Atume, Zaki Ormin, and Hon Kenneth Iyo.
The protesters’ actions have been described as an “archaic way of protesting”. However, their desperation and frustration are palpable, as they feel their people are being “slaughtered on a daily basis”.

Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Victor Omirin, confirmed the incident, stating that the protesters burned down the secretariat and the Ter Nagi palace. The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, could not be reached for comment.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, with recent attacks resulting in significant loss of life. The government’s urgent intervention is needed to hear the protesters’ cries and calm the situation.
