Nigeria is grappling with a severe Lassa fever outbreak, with 95 deaths recorded and a high Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.8%, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The latest Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 8, 2025, reveals that delayed hospital visits, high treatment costs, and poor environmental sanitation are exacerbating the outbreak.
The disease has spread to 12 states and 70 Local Government Areas (LGAs), with Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo accounting for 73% of all reported cases. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, many Nigerians remain unaware of early symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
The government has intensified response efforts by deploying rapid response teams to affected states and increasing surveillance. Public health experts emphasize the need for community awareness, improved access to healthcare, and stronger community engagement to reduce fatalities.
