The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has lauded Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his developmental initiatives and his magnanimous gesture in honoring Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. Speaking at Abaribe’s 70th birthday celebration, organized by the Abia State Government, Akpabio commended Otti’s leadership style and hinted at a more elaborate recognition if he joins the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A Show of Leadership and Political Strategy
Akpabio, who attended the event in Abia State, described Governor Otti as a leader with a deep sense of generosity and goodwill. He noted that the governor’s decision to celebrate Abaribe, despite political differences, demonstrated a profound understanding of politics and governance.
“Otti’s gesture in honoring Abaribe shows he is a true statesman. It is a strategic move that has further endeared him to the people of Abia South,” Akpabio remarked. “He is like me—someone who prioritizes the welfare of his people. His generosity will continue to benefit Ndi Abia.”
The Senate President further highlighted that Otti’s decision to celebrate Abaribe was a politically astute one that would yield significant dividends in the future. “By recognizing Abaribe, you have not only celebrated a distinguished leader but have also strengthened your political goodwill among the people of Abia South. When the time for re-election comes, you will see the impact of this investment,” Akpabio stated.
Akpabio’s Invitation to APC
While praising Otti’s achievements, Akpabio humorously noted that he was unable to fully commend the governor’s work because he was still a member of the Labour Party. “I have seen the remarkable progress you are making in Abia, but I cannot openly celebrate you just yet because you are still in the Labour Party—you are still labouring,” Akpabio quipped. “The day you join the APC, I will publicly acknowledge all you have done, and you will see how I will celebrate you in grand style.”
Abaribe’s Legacy of Integrity and Courage
Akpabio also took time to commend Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for his courage and dedication to the people of Abia. He recalled Abaribe’s bold decision to stand as surety for Nnamdi Kanu, a move that shocked many at the time.
“Abaribe is a man of great sacrifice, a true son of Ndi Igbo,” Akpabio said. “When he signed the bail bond for Nnamdi Kanu, many wondered why a senator would take such a risk. But when I asked him, he said he believed so strongly in the cause that he was willing to go to prison if necessary. That level of integrity is rare.”
The Senate President emphasized that his attendance at the event was not solely to celebrate Abaribe but also to join Governor Otti in recognizing a leader whose life and work have inspired many. “This is not just about Abaribe—I have celebrated him in the Senate. I am here to stand with you, Otti, in giving glory to God for the life of a man worth emulating. He is a role model for Ndi Igbo and Nigerian youths,” Akpabio added.
Otti: ‘This Celebration Is Beyond Politics’
In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti congratulated Abaribe on reaching this milestone and described him as a fearless and courageous leader who deserves recognition. Otti emphasized that the celebration was not driven by political motives but by a commitment to acknowledging individuals who have made meaningful contributions to society.
“This event is not about politics. I believe in celebrating Abians who have distinguished themselves,” Otti stated. “We are gathered here today to honor a man of courage, selflessness, and truth. This is not a political rally. Politicians think about the next election, but true leaders think about the next generation.”
He also dismissed speculations regarding his political future, stating that his focus remains on governance and not immediate electoral considerations. “If you came here thinking this is about votes, you can keep your votes. I am not interested in them,” Otti declared. “By the way, have I even announced that I am running in 2027? Some people say I traveled to London for political meetings. The truth is, we have been holding our meetings right here—they have just run out of ideas.”
A Celebration of Leadership and Service
The event was attended by political figures, traditional rulers, and stakeholders who came together to celebrate Senator Abaribe’s impactful contributions to Abia State and Nigeria. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and appreciation, with many acknowledging the significance of honoring leaders who have served with distinction.
As Akpabio’s remarks suggest, the political landscape in Abia remains dynamic, and his invitation to Otti to join the APC signals potential realignments in the future. For now, the governor remains focused on governance, while the Senate President keeps the door open for a grand celebration should Otti decide to make the switch.
