NAF Chief Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar Becomes Africa Air Forces Chairman

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), has taken over as Chairman of the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF), advocating for African-driven solutions to the continent’s security issues.

The AAAF is a non-political body focused on improving airpower capabilities and fostering cooperation among African nations.

Speaking at the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in Zambia, held from 16 to 22 February 2025, Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized the significance of regional collaboration and strategic alliances in enhancing Africa’s airpower and tackling shared security threats. He highlighted the need for increased cooperation among African Air Forces to address challenges such as terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crime.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of forging strategic partnerships with allied nations and global organizations to build capacity, improve interoperability, and advance aerospace technology.

According to the CAS, the AAAF symposium represents more than just an exchange of ideas—it is a commitment to a safer and more prosperous Africa. “Our collaboration is a powerful reminder of the importance of finding African solutions to African problems,” he stated.

As the new AAAF Chairman, Air Marshal Abubakar outlined key priorities, including making the Association fully operational and strengthening Africa-led Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) efforts. He reassured members of Nigeria’s dedication to hosting a successful African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in 2026. Calling for renewed commitment from all member states, he underscored that unity and cooperation are vital to achieving the Association’s objectives.

His appointment as AAAF Chairman highlights Nigeria’s growing leadership and expanding airpower capabilities in the region.

In a related development, following the successful 3rd edition in Abuja in 2024, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has once again been chosen to host the 4th edition of the African Air Forces Forum (AAF). This makes Nigeria the first country to host consecutive editions of the event.

Scheduled for 21 to 23 May 2025 in Lagos, the upcoming AAF will focus on the theme “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security.”

The decision by event organizers, Great Minds Events Management LLC, to entrust the NAF with hosting the event again underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in regional airpower discussions and the NAF’s ability to facilitate high-level engagements.

The AAF will bring together Air Chiefs, defence experts, and industry leaders to explore advancements in aerospace technology and their role in strengthening security across Africa.
