The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended the strike action that began on February 18. The suspension was confirmed in a statement released on Monday by the Chairman of the KASU chapter, Dr. Peter Adamu.
In the statement, Dr. Adamu revealed that the decision to suspend the strike was reached on Saturday after the state government made significant strides in resolving the issues raised by the union.
The government demonstrated goodwill in resolving the impasse by immediately releasing funds to pay the 60 percent of September 2017 withheld salaries and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions, Adamu stated.
The government has also agreed to a clear timeline for the payment of several outstanding payments, including the five months of withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), pension remittance for the period 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and Group Life Assurance.
Additionally, the government showed a strong commitment to implementing wage awards and granting autonomy to the university, a move the union had long been advocating for.
Dr. Adamu expressed the union’s appreciation to Governor Uba Sani for his swift intervention and leadership in addressing the strike causes. He also thanked the university management, as well as the Commissioners for Education, Sports, and other stakeholders, for their collaborative efforts in resolving the matter promptly.
With the resolution in place, Dr. Adamu called on all academic staff to return to their duties and resume their invaluable services to the university community.
