The Labour Party (LP) national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, has reiterated the party’s commitment to supporting the Southeast in its quest for national leadership. Speaking at a Labour Party rally organized by Southeast members in Abuja ahead of the Area Council election scheduled for early next year, Abure expressed pride in zoning the party’s 2023 presidential ticket to the Southeast and highlighted lessons for future success.
Addressing attendees, Abure stated, “Before the 2023 general election, I used to believe erroneously that Igbos were not united. However, when Peter Obi joined the party and I campaigned across Nigeria with him, I discovered the Igbos are the most united, formidable, industrious, hardworking, and fearless people.” He added that the party had no regrets about its decision to zone the presidential ticket to the Southeast. “We decided to wipe the tears of the Igbos, and we did that powerfully and courageously in the 2023 election.”
However, Abure emphasized the importance of strategic alliances. “The Igbos need more realignment with other sections of the country. History shows that the Yorubas were once in a similar position, unable to secure the presidency. Once they realigned, it became easier for them to achieve that goal. This is a lesson for the Igbos.” He called on Southeast leaders to work toward unity, stressing that leadership and speaking with one voice were critical for political success. “Not everyone needs to agree on every issue, but unity of purpose is essential to realizing the dreams of the Igbos. Labour Party remains ready to support Ndigbo in their ambition to rule the country.”
Abure assured aspirants that the party would not impose candidates and that the primary process would be transparent. “The reason Nigeria and other political parties face challenges is because leaders subvert the people’s wishes and aspirations. As the National Chairman, I will discourage this in our party. Only party members will decide who becomes the candidates.”
He further emphasized that Labour Party is the best political platform in the country. “The upcoming election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be between Labour Party and others, and we will ensure credible, free, and fair primaries without anointed candidates,” he said.
The rally concluded with assurances from Abure that Labour Party is dedicated to fostering democracy, fairness, and unity within the party as it works toward a brighter future for the Southeast and the nation at large.
