The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has welcomed the proposal of the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, to pick a consensus candidate for the November 8, 2025 governorship election. This move is aimed at avoiding the stress and financial burden associated with conducting a primary election.
Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, a frontline aspirant and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, has backed the call for a consensus candidate, stating that he would support the party and the candidate that emerges. Other prominent aspirants, including Sir Paul Chukwuma and Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, are also vying for the party’s ticket.
The Publicity Secretary of the party in Anambra, Okelo Madukaife, described Ganduje’s idea as a welcome development, while Chief Ben Ude urged all aspirants to support the call for a consensus candidate. The APC National Vice Chairman (South East), Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, confirmed that the party is exploring the option of a consensus candidate.
However, not everyone is in agreement. Chief Marcel Okoro, a party leader and former Secretary, expressed concerns that adopting a consensus candidate may prevent the best candidate from emerging. He appealed to the APC leadership to create a level playing field during the primaries.
Despite the ongoing insecurity challenges in the South-East, the APC has assured that it is safe to conduct the election in Anambra, citing measures being taken by the Federal Government to improve security in the state.
