The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian government, threatening a nationwide protest if it fails to halt policies that exacerbate economic hardship for Nigerians.
In a communique, the TUC condemned the government’s “unacceptable” level of exploitation, rejecting proposed toll gates on roads and a speculated 65% hike in electricity tariffs.
The union demanded that roads be fixed and repaired to international standards before tolling can be considered and urged the government to address the root cause of escalating prices and inflation, which it attributed to excessive devaluation of the naira.
The TUC also rejected a planned 50% increase in telecom tariffs and emphasized the need for inclusive consultation with stakeholders before implementing policies.
