EFCC Officer Tragically Passes After Sudden Collapse in Lagos

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, as an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attached to the Lagos Division reportedly collapsed and died in an undisclosed location within Lagos State.

A video circulating online captured the moment the lifeless body of the unidentified officer, who was not wearing a uniform at the time, was surrounded by sympathizers, including police officers. The officers were seen coordinating a search of the deceased’s bag, during which they discovered his identity card, confirming his role as an EFCC officer.

In the video, a voice could be heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”

Confirmation of Incident and Ongoing Investigation
Speaking to Hobnob News on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the officer’s death and revealed that an investigation is underway. “Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.

Although the cause of the officer’s death remains unclear, the EFCC has assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

EFCC’s Recent Encounters with Danger
This incident comes amid reports of increasing risks faced by EFCC operatives during operations. Earlier, on January 15, Hobnob News reported an attack on Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, Aminu Salisu, by a suspected cybercriminal, Joshua Ikechukwu, in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Salisu, part of a team dispatched from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, was shot during a raid aimed at apprehending a group of suspected cybercriminals. The operatives were ambushed during the operation, leading to the unfortunate incident.

Dele Oyewale, while condemning what he described as “negative narratives” surrounding the attack on Salisu, emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to ensuring justice for its officers and holding those responsible for such acts accountable.

Call for Safety Measures
The latest tragedy highlights the need for enhanced safety protocols for anti-graft operatives, who often put their lives at risk in the line of duty. The EFCC is urged to prioritize the welfare and security of its personnel as they continue their mission to combat financial crimes in Nigeria.
