Akwa United’s Goalkeeper Coach Moses Effiong Passes Away After Long Illness

Moses Effiong, a former goalkeeper and assistant coach for Akwa United Football Club, has passed away in the United States after a prolonged illness.
His death occurred just three months after celebrating his 65th birthday and after seeking medical treatment abroad in hopes of recovery.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the club’s Chairman, Paul Bassey, via a statement from the club’s Media Director, Mfon Patrick.

Bassey remembered Effiong as a “complete gentleman,” a dedicated football coach, and a wonderful family man, committed to every task he was given.

The statement read, “The Management, staff, and players of Akwa United Football Club regret to announce the sudden demise of our goalkeeper coach and a member of Nigeria 1980 Africa Cup of Nations Winner coach Effiong Moses (MON), who passed away early on Sunday 26 January 2025 in the United States after a long battle with illness.”
