Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed his intention to retire to Onitsha as a secondary school teacher. He made this statement while teaching final-year students at Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha, as part of the International Day of Education celebrations ¹.
“I was just passing by when I decided to mark the International Day of Education here with you,” Obi said. “Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the most important capital, equipment that you need to be successful.” He emphasized the significance of education, encouraging the students to take their studies seriously, as some of them have the potential to become governors and presidents.
Obi also shared a personal anecdote, recalling how he was once a student at the same school, saluting General Gowon during a visit in 1970. He credited education for his growth and success, allowing him to eventually sit alongside General Gowon and make important decisions.
“I hope to retire to Onitsha someday, and take up a teaching job to inspire children,” Obi concluded. This statement highlights his commitment to giving back to his community and inspiring future generations through education.
