Lagos lawmakers have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa following allegations of significant financial and statutory misconduct. Mr. Obasa, accused of mismanaging funds, was replaced by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda. Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1 and a former chief whip, assumes the speakership after his removal.
The impeachment follows recent reports by The Gazette, which revealed Mr. Obasa’s role in withdrawing ₦43.5 billion for backup vehicles for legislators, alongside other contentious financial actions. Sources indicate that Mr. Obasa was in Atlanta when the decision was finalized.
At 52, Mr. Obasa first took office as Speaker on June 8, 2015, during former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration. However, his tenure has been plagued with allegations of fraud and political intimidation. In 2020, The Gazette published investigations that unveiled how he funneled Lagos State funds into personal accounts and businesses. Additional reports by Sahara Reporters disclosed the extent of his assets across Lagos.
Mr. Obasa was previously invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning, following mounting public and media scrutiny over his activities. Despite denying all allegations, no formal charges were brought against him after his meeting with the anti-graft agency. His removal marks a pivotal moment in the Lagos State House of Assembly, as questions over accountability and transparency persist.
