In a significant political shift, Abbas Sani Abbas, the former Commissioner for Rural and Community Development in Kano State, has defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His move adds to the growing list of prominent NNPP members abandoning the party in recent months.
Abbas announced his defection on Friday night during a visit to the Kano residence of Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament. Speaking during the visit, Abbas pledged his commitment to advancing the APC’s agenda across Kano State and beyond.
The mass defections from the NNPP, popularly referred to as the “Barau Tsunami,” have seen thousands of party members—including notable leaders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State—sever ties with the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya movement. In a symbolic gesture, many defectors discarded their signature red caps, an emblem of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and embraced the APC.
The defection wave has been fueled by discontent within the NNPP, particularly following the dismissal of six key officials, including Abbas and former Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Bichi. The officials were removed last month after some NNPP leaders urged Governor Abba Yusuf to take a firmer grip on governance in Kano State.
During Abbas’s visit, Senator Barau Jibrin warmly welcomed him into the APC fold. The event was attended by Kano State APC Chairman Prince Abdullahi Abbas (Ɗan Sarki, Jikan Sarki) and other influential party leaders.
In his address, Senator Barau commended Abbas for his dedication to grassroots mobilization and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to good governance, inclusivity, and service to the people.
“The APC is a broad-based platform that welcomes all who are passionate about building a stronger Nigeria. We remain dedicated to promoting values that prioritize the well-being of Kano State residents and all Nigerians,” Senator Barau stated.
Abbas expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and assured the APC leadership of his readiness to work toward the party’s success in the state.
As Kano’s political landscape continues to evolve, the wave of defections to the APC signifies a pivotal moment that could redefine the dynamics ahead of future elections. Hobnob News will provide updates on these developments as they unfold.
