The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ilorin Zonal Command has launched an investigation into Mohammed Aliyu, popularly known as Labasa, the former Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) Chairman of Edu Local Government Area in Kwara State. Labasa is accused of mismanaging N329.5 million in funds, including physical cash and internally generated revenue, between March 18, 2021, and May 24, 2024.
The probe follows a petition filed by Alhaji Mohammad Al-Hassan, who accused Labasa of financial irregularities, abuse of due process in contract awards, and interference by the state government in local government allocations and intervention funds. According to the petition, the funds were allocated for various projects, including the rehabilitation of markets and health clinics, provision of solar lights, and purchase of a borehole drilling machine.
Labasa has denied the allegations, stating that he did not misappropriate any funds and that all documents related to the projects are available at the council records. He also confirmed that he was invited by the EFCC and cooperated fully with the investigation.
The EFCC spokesperson, Ayodele Babatunde, however, stated that he was not aware of any petition or investigation into Labasa. The development has raised concerns about the influence of the state government in the investigation, with allegations emerging that the Attorney General’s office is attempting to suppress further disclosures.
