President Tinubu Hails Mahama’s Victory, Calls for Stronger Nigeria-Ghana Ties

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his historic victory in the December 7, 2024, general elections. The commendation follows Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession of defeat, which aimed to defuse rising tensions reported in several constituencies.

Though Ghana’s Electoral Commission has yet to declare the official results, Bawumia’s New Patriotic Party acknowledged Mahama’s lead, with internal reviews showing him securing 56.3% of the votes to Bawumia’s 41.3%.

In a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader praised Mahama’s triumph as a significant step for Ghana’s democracy and stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Tinubu, who serves as ECOWAS chairman, expressed optimism about Mahama’s leadership fostering regional cohesion.

President Tinubu lauded Ghanaians for their peaceful election conduct, celebrating their steadfast commitment to democracy as a model for Africa. He also applauded Bawumia’s graceful concession, calling it a testament to Ghana’s democratic maturity.

Tinubu highlighted Mahama’s return to the presidency, after his tenure from 2012 to 2017, as a reflection of the Ghanaian people’s faith in his leadership and vision. He pledged to strengthen the long-standing Nigeria-Ghana partnership, emphasizing shared cultural and historical ties, Pan-African ideals, and aspirations for economic growth and regional peace.

The Nigerian President also extended his gratitude to outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo for his leadership contributions, expressing eagerness to collaborate with Mahama’s administration to chart a brighter future for West Africa.

As Ghana transitions to new leadership, Tinubu’s remarks underscore a commitment to fostering unity and progress across the region.
