The federal government has distributed 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO). This initiative is part of the President’s Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme, aimed at alleviating the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
Speaking at the launch and handover ceremony of the Renewed Hope Transportation Scheme in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, highlighted the program’s benefits. He emphasized that the initiative provides Nigerians with cleaner, more affordable energy solutions, while reducing transportation costs for operators and commuters.
“These buses symbolize the government’s commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy,” the minister said. “They also allow us to monitor and ensure the safety and efficiency of the transportation sector, ultimately benefiting all Nigerians.”
Sen. Alkali further noted that switching to compressed natural gas will cut carbon emissions, lower fuel costs for transportation operators, and promote a more efficient and sustainable transport system.
The minister urged unions to maintain the buses and utilize them effectively. He also called on Nigerians to support the initiative, stating, “This is not just about today but about creating a transportation system that will serve generations to come. I appeal to all Nigerians to embrace this initiative and support the government’s efforts to move our nation forward. We must work together to ensure that our resources are used to our advantage, thus creating a Nigeria where opportunities abound and innovation thrives.”
The Ministry of Transportation will also prioritize awareness campaigns to educate transport owners, operators, passengers, and the general public about the initiative’s benefits and accessibility. The minister assured Nigerians that the initiative is part of the government’s commitment to improving citizens’ welfare, in line with constitutional directives.
“This will no doubt make the initiative popular, acceptable, and reliable to enhance the welfare of Nigerians, which the President is passionate about providing,” Sen. Alkali added.
Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, the Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, announced that residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would enjoy 40 days of free rides on the buses. “This initiative is safer, more reliable, and available,” he said. “On these buses for the next 40 days, people will enjoy free transportation as part of the benefits of this administration. And after these 40 days, they will enjoy a discount because of the work of Mr. President.”
He also revealed that additional buses would be rolled out in the coming months to expand the program’s reach.
Dr. Musa Mohammed, National President of RTEAN, described the initiative as a demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to improving citizens’ lives during difficult times. He emphasized the critical role of transportation in connecting people to opportunities, services, and essential resources.
“Transportation is the backbone of any economy,” Dr. Mohammed stated. “However, many of our fellow citizens have been facing difficulties with the rising costs of transportation, impacting their daily lives and limiting their access to work, education, and health care. Recognizing these challenges, the federal government has taken a remarkable step towards alleviating this burden.”
He praised the introduction of CNG buses as a significant relief for individuals and families. “These CNG buses will provide free transportation to individuals in need, creating a ripple effect of positivity throughout our communities. We will not only be easing the financial strain on families but will also be contributing to a greener and more sustainable environment. CNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, and by utilizing these buses, we are playing our part in reducing our carbon footprint.”
The federal government’s initiative represents a strategic move toward promoting clean energy and addressing transportation challenges while fostering economic and environmental benefits for Nigerians. Through the Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme, the government seeks to transform the country’s transport sector, reduce costs, and enhance overall well-being.
