The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Enugu State has finally released the corpse of Late Mrs. Janet Nwaosu, whose body was seized for over two years following allegations of negligence by hospital staff. According to SaharaReporters, the remains of Mrs. Nwaosu have been buried after the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Enugu Annex, intervened .
The release of Mrs. Nwaosu’s corpse comes after a prolonged dispute between the hospital management and her family. The family had accused Dr. Chibuoke and a nurse of injecting Mrs. Nwaosu with a fatal drug on October 18, 2022. Despite their demands for justice, the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Obinna Onodugo, allegedly refused to hand over the body and even used the police to intimidate the family.
As part of the settlement, the UNTH management paid an undisclosed amount for the burial and offered employment to one of Mrs. Nwaosu’s children. The accumulated mortuary bill was also forfeited by the hospital.
This development brings closure to the Nwaosu family, who had been seeking justice for their mother’s alleged wrongful death. The case highlights concerns about medical negligence and the need for accountability within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Efforts to reach the hospital’s spokesperson, Cyril Keleze, were unsuccessful. However, the hospital’s website highlights their commitment to providing quality healthcare services and ensuring patient safety ¹.
